Prepare your patient for the eye dressing or other eye shield. Instill eye ointment into your patient's eyes if directed by his physician. This is done to protect his cornea from injury or infection. Shave your clients skin if its too hairy and apply benzoin as ordered, so that tape applied to the skin can stick better. Verify which eye needs to be patched by checking the physicians order.

Instruct your patient to close his eyes, then place the patch over his eye. After this, secure the patch with tape. Have your patient close his eyes tightly to prevent his eye from opening before the pressure dressing is applied. Fold an eye patch in two and place it over the closed eye lid, then apply more unfolded patches. After this , secure the pressure dressing with tape applied from cheek to forehead. Ensure that the strips of tape overlap each other.
