Distance Education Masters Degrees

If you've graduated from a bachelor's degree program and are considering taking your education to the next collegiate level, brainstorm what you could do with an extra $10,100 per year. That's the amount the U.S. Census Bureau reports is the difference master's graduates make over students with only a bachelor's degree. For students who prefer to learn online, there are many options to pursue a graduate degree from both online-only colleges and universities with online programs along with their standard bricks-and-mortar campuses.

    • Learn to lead through Capella University's online master of science degree in leadership. Classes include leading for the future, strategies for sustainability, leader as change agent, social entrepreneurship, developing innovative organizations, leading collaboratively and leading in social and community-based organizations. Students have up to four years to complete the program.

      Candidates must have a bachelor's degree (any field) with a minimum grade point average of 2.30. The university requires each student to secure an Internet connection (high-speed recommended), Flash Player, Microsoft office, Acrobat and email. Hardware requirements include a minimum 20 GB of hard disk space, video card, minimum 512 MB RAM, minimum 1 GHZ processor, sound card and speakers.

    University of Illinois

    • Take your education in the legal field further through the University of Illinois distance master of arts in legal studies degree program. Classes in the program include juvenile law, criminal law, jurisprudence, women in American law, evidence, family law, judicial administration, law and inequality, criminal procedure and environmental law.

      Applicants must have a bachelor's degree (any major) with a minimum grade point average of 3.25. A writing sample is also required. Students in the program must have a high-speed Internet connection, Windows Media Player, minimum 500 MHz processor, 128 MB RAM, audio card, speakers and Adobe Acrobat.

    The Pennsylvania State University

    • Students interested in keeping their country safe may find the master of professional studies in homeland security program a good match, through The Pennsylvania State University's online Penn State World Campus. Topics of study include disaster communication, introduction to homeland security, social and ethical issues, network management and security, insurgency, public health evaluation of disasters and bioterrorism, the politics of terrorism and disaster psychology.

      Penn requires students to have a bachelor's degree (any field) with a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Three letters of recommendation, a resume, GRE scores and a statement of purpose are also required. All enrollees must have a high-speed Internet connection, speakers, sound card, 256 MB of RAM, DVD-ROM, printer, microphone, Microsoft Office, 500 MB free disk space and 1 GHz or higher processor.
