Top Ranked Distance Learning Universities

Online distance education has increased in popularity, even in more traditional university settings. While there are no official rankings of distance learning universities to establish the "top" schools in online learning, several different lists do exist. Online Education Database released its rankings of online universities in 2009. Similarly, another well-respected site devoted to online learning, Geteducated.com, has released rankings regarding the "best buys" in online education for certain academic disciplines.
  1. Nova Southeastern University

    • Nova Southeastern University (Nova) is the top ranked distance learning university in terms of the number of programs it offers, graduation rate, scholarly citations and admission standards, according to Online Education Database (OED). OED ranked the school based on these criteria in 2009. Nova offers an extensive number of online undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Undergraduate majors are offered in fields such as chemistry, human resource management, international business administration, psychology and public health. Even more impressive is the long list of graduate degree programs at both the master's degree and doctoral level. A few of the graduate programs Nova offers include studies in accounting, computer science, criminal justice, speech pathology and physical therapy.

    Southeast Missouri State University

    • One popular field among distance education colleges and universities is the study of business administration. GetEducated.com ranked the "best buys" among online Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) programs in 2009 and determined that Southeast Missouri State University's (SEMO) program topped the list. One of the criteria for this particular list was that the school be AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accredited; this is the highest academic accreditation offered to business schools. GetEducated.com noted that the average cost for an AACSB accredited M.B.A. was $32,926 in 2009. By contrast, SEMO's program cost $8,234 for resident students and $14,174 for non-resident students as of the fall 2009. The program is a 33 credit hour program in general business management. Students seeking specializations in fields like marketing or finance would find that this program does not meet their needs, but could still consider the SEMO on-campus degree option.
