Schools sanctioned by the AAVMC require at least three to five letters of recommendation. These letters generally come from the students' professors, employers and veterinarians whom the applicant has worked with. These will give the committees choosing applicants a view of their personalities, attributes, work ethics and temperaments.
All of the sanctioned schools will require you to take the graduate Review Exam. This is a general test that covers 3 specific areas to determine skills in retention, mathematics and problem solving. The general average for grades in undergrad range from 2.8 to 4.0. All colleges do make a notation that the lower your grade point average, the lesser your chances of acceptance.
Undergraduate courses will range in total credit hours from 60 to 79 in General Education with a majority being in the sciences. These include biology, chemistry, bio-genetics, mammalian physiology as well as other elective science courses. Some basic general education courses are necessary to complete, including but not limited to six hours of English composition, humanities and an ethics course.
Entrance a a school of veterinary medicine will require meeting very specific deadlines. Some of the schools have three or four different deadlines for certain documents while others require that you send everything at once. All schools require a fee for submitting the application. The fee ranges from $60 to $200 depending on the school.
