Decide if the medical field is really the best choice for you. Ask yourself why you want to go to medical school. Doctors must have a strong desire to help people and the determination to stick with eight years, or more, of rigorous study. If you are just looking for a career that pays well, it may not be the right choice.
Start taking the prerequisites early. The required classes for admission to a medical program are organic biology, advanced algebra, calculus, chemistry, biology, calculus and English composition. It is a good idea to take courses in the humanities and social sciences as well. Being a doctor is not just about knowing science, it is also about knowing how to relate to your patients.

Volunteer at a hospital or medical clinic. The medical college admission board looks for candidates that not only have high test scores and a GPA of 3.5, but they also want to see that you are getting authentic experience of what a medical career is all about. Choose a medical college that suits your needs academically and realistically. Not everyone can get into Princeton or Harvard, but there are many good medical schools out there waiting for the right students to apply.
