Medical training schools in Kenya differ from medical schools in the United States in that they are not graduate schools, but rather undergraduate programs with intensive specialization tracks in various fields of health relevant to developing nations. Rather than a general university program rife with prerequisites and electives, the one-to-four year certificate, diploma and degree programs offer nothing but training in the desired subject area.

      Kenya Medical Training College is a behemoth of an institution. The school has 28 campuses spread throughout the country, in places as far flung as Lodwar and Garissa. Kenya Medical Training College, which operates under Kenya's Ministry of Medical Services, has established this many branches to decentralize the health care industry. The school offers diploma courses in 16 specialties that range from clinical medicine to neurophysiology technology. Higher diplomas are awarded in fields such as health and HIV/AIDS; nursing; and clinical medicine and surgery.

    The Institute of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases

    • The Institute of Tropical Medicine and Infecitious Disease does important research.

      The Institute of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology aims to address problems with tropical medicine and infectious diseases in Kenya by training students in health sciences. The school, which also conducts extensive research, offers diplomas in two areas--HIV/AIDS management, and clinical management--and a bachelor's degree in medical laboratory sciences. In addition to medical classes, students in the bachelor's program take courses such as laboratory management, ethics and law, and development studies and social ethics, in order to be completely prepared for life as a medical professional in Kenya.

    International School of Medicine and Applied Technology

    • ISMAT has a large focus and international affiliations.

      Kisumu, Kenya's International School of Medicine and Applied Technology, has a vast pedagogical vision. The school aims to improve health care systems and industries not just within Kenya, but across Africa, through its training. The school awards certificates in three disciplines, diplomas in six, and a Bachelor's of Science in Clinical Medicine & Community Health. The western Kenyan institution is an independent NGO affiliated with Moi University Eldoret, Kings College London, and California State University, and hosts an exchange program with the University of New Mexico.
