Pediatric Oncology Schools

Doctors and medical students typically pursue the sub-specialty of pediatric hematology and oncology through a three-year residency or educational clinical fellowship program. Pediatric oncologists receive their certification and bi-annual renewal credentials from the American Board of Pediatrics and may join the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology organization of doctors, researchers, nurses, students and supporters. In 2008, specialized physicians earned a median annual salary of $339,738, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  1. New York University

    • The New York University School of Medicine offers residency and fellowship programs in hematology and oncology at the Langone Medical Center. Students in the three-year residency will learn common and unusual hematological and oncological problems, through clinical experience led by physicians who specialize in malignancies, solid tumors and bone marrow transplants. Residents have weekly observation and hands-on experience with spinal tap, bone marrow aspirate and biopsy procedures. Lectures, discussion and journal groups, seminars, tumor board and a final project presentation make up the academic schedule. The three-year fellowship focuses on bone marrow transplant, biology, blood banking, laboratory hematology and management of cancer and blood disorders in the first year. Fellows treat newborns to young children and counsel families. The second and third years focus on research and teaching presentation with a minimum of one half day clinical work weekly.
