How to Number Human Ribs

The human body contains 24 ribs. Ribs are flat curved bones that attach to the spine and form a protective cage around the upper body organs, such as the heart and lungs. Ribs are arranged in 12 pairs. From top to bottom the first seven ribs are called true ribs, the next three are false ribs and the last are floating ribs. Ribs should be numbered from one to 12 consecutively, starting from the first true rib and ending at the last floating rib.

Instructions

  1. Rib Numbering

    • 1

Number the true ribs consecutively one to seven, starting at the topmost true rib and continuing downward toward the skeletal feet bones. These ribs are connected to the sternum by strips of cartilage.

    • 2

Number the false ribs consecutively eight to 10, beginning at the false rib closet to the seventh true rib and continuing downward toward the skeletal feet bones. These ribs are attached to the seventh true rib and do not attach directly to the sternum.

    • 3

Number the floating ribs consecutively 11 to 12, beginning at the floating rib closet to the 10th false rib and continuing downward toward the skeletal feet bones. These ribs are attached to the spine.
