Low-Tier Law Schools

As interest in the field of law increases, so does the number of students hoping to attend law school. While the majority of students dream of going to a top-tier school such as Harvard or Stanford, attending such a school is out of reach to many, for financial reasons or admission requirements. For those determined to practice law, however, attending a low-tier law school is an option.

  1. University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law

    • Prospective lawyers who want to study in the heart of the nation's capital should consider the University of the District of Columbia's David A. Clarke School of Law in Washington, D.C. The university was founded in 1966 when the D.C. School of Law and the University of the District of Columbia merged. The university offers full- and part-time programs that allow students to study on their own schedules and still complete the program in as little as three years. Students also are encouraged to pursue community service and public interest work in the legal field. In 2010 tuition averages $7,300 a year for residents of Washington, while out-of-district students face tuition costs of $10,000 per year. Financial aid options are available.

    Thomas Jefferson School of Law

    • The Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego, California, is another option for a student looking to attend a low-tier school. Full- and part-time study options are available, giving students the opportunity to complete their education in three to four years. Students also can study abroad, either in Hangzhou, China, or Nice, France. Tuition averages $36,000 a year for full- time students and $24,000 for part-time students, with financial aid options available.

    City University of New York School of Law

    • Students looking to practice law in the public sector can consider CUNY School of Law, the only publicly funded law school in New York City. The university focuses on training attorneys for public service and has more graduates practicing at public agencies than any other school. Students attend classes full time and can expect to finish their degree in approximately three years. Tuition ranges from $10,000 per year for New York state residents to $17,000 per year for out-of-state students. Minimal financial aid options are available.
