How to Cite Supreme Court Cases in Bluebook for a Research Paper

For those in law school, knowledge of the correct way to write citations is critical. Bluebook is the official citation for legal papers, used by law students, professionals and judges alike. As the high court of the United States, the Supreme Court's decisions are frequently referenced in legal papers and works. Bluebook citation rules are easy to master.

      Begin with citing the name of the court case. Italicize the name of the case.

      Locate the volume number of the U.S. Supreme Court reports and the page number where the case can be found.

      Locate the year the case was decided, then place it in parentheses.

      Order the information as follows: Name of Case [in italics], Volume number U.S. Page number (Year).

      For example: Smith v. Rhode Island, 167 U.S. 22 (1978).
