How to Cite Criminal Cases for Federal Laws in State Court

Federal law often trumps state law. You may always use decisions with persuasive authority even if the authority does not hold mandatory authority.       Start with the case name. You can use the plaintiff, followed by a "v.", followed by the defendant. For example, "Example v. Sample."

      Add a comma to the end of the case name. Add in one space. Type the Volume Number of the federal reporter. Add in one space. Type the abbreviation of the federal reporter. Add in one space. Type the page number of the first page of the decision.
