How did duke university get its name?

Duke University was named after its principal benefactor, James Buchanan Duke, an American industrialist and tobacco magnate from Durham, North Carolina. He began making large cash gifts to Trinity College—which became his family's namesake institution—beginning in 1924 shortly after he created, as part of his estate, what remains Duke Endowment.
