How to apply to MFA programs

The MFA degree, or Master of Fine Arts, is considered a terminal degree in many art fields, including visual arts like photography, painting, creative writing and theater. There are many different MFA programs and the application process can be overwhelming due to the sheer amount of information available. Choosing a graduate program in the arts is a personal process; it can be different for everyone, but there are general guidelines that will help make the journey to admission less difficult.

Instructions

    • 1

Research MFA programs in your area, typically either creative writing, film, visual arts or theater arts. Consider whether you want a fully funded program, where you want to live or whether you want a traditional program or a low-residency program. Many times schools will have open houses where you can meet faculty and current students to learn more about the school and program.

    • 2

Decide which programs to which you want to apply and find out what application materials they require, such as portfolio guidelines, recommendation letters and standardized test scores. Ask those writing your recommendations for letters at least two months in advance of the application deadline if possible, suggests Tom Kealey, author of "The Creative Writing MFA Handbook."

    • 3

Develop and revise your portfolio or creative works you will submit with your application; request transcripts that may be needed from other schools you have attended; take any standardized tests like the Graduate Record Exam, or GRE, if necessary; and start your personal statements for your applications. Research the faculty in each program to prepare for any interviews the programs may call you about.

    • 4

Fill out the applications; many are online and can be submitted electronically, while others provide the option of electronic or handwritten submission. Review the applications for any errors and make sure you have all the necessary materials required by the schools.

    • 5

Submit your applications electronically or via snail mail prior to each program's deadline and wait for your acceptance!
