Minimum Qualification for an MBA

A Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree is often pursued by business professionals looking for career advancement. MBA studies focus on areas such as marketing, finance, accounting and operations management. The minimum qualifications for MBA programs vary by school; however, most have minimum educational and test requirements.
  1. Education

    • A bachelor's degree from an accredited university is typically the minimum educational requirement for MBA candidates. Many schools do not require a specific degree or area of study. However, courses in calculus, statistics and economics are often recommended. Some schools have a minimum grade point average (GPA) requirement while others do not.

    Application and Forms

    • In order to apply for most MBA programs, you must fill out the university's application form and send in the application fee, which varies by school. Other documents typically required include transcripts showing your GPA, a resume and essays. MBA application essays are designed to learn more about you as a person, your goals and contributions you have made in the workplace. Sample essay topics include "Lasting impacts you made in the workplace" and "How an MBA will help you achieve your career aspirations." Two or three letters of recommendation are also typically required. Professional recommendations from supervisors and co-workers indicating your strengths as a leader and manager are highly regarded. Deadlines for applications vary by school. Many schools have several application deadlines throughout the year for admission to fall, spring or summer semesters.

    Standardized Tests

    • MBA programs typically require a standardized test. The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is most commonly required. The GMAT consists of three parts: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing. According to MBA Programs.org, the GMAT measures skills important in MBA studies and indicates those who are likely to succeed in MBA programs. The test is offered at testing centers around the country year-round and is valid for five years. Many schools do not have a minimum GMAT score requirement; however, for competitive programs, a high score is imperative. Some schools will accept the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) in place of the GMAT. For international students, a standardized English language exam is typically required.

    Work Experience

    • Many MBA programs do not have a work experience requirement. Others may give preference to candidates with management experience. Even if a candidate does not have relevant work experience, it is helpful to show leadership in extracurricular activities or community service as an undergraduate.

    Interview

    • Some MBA programs may require or request an interview. Interview topics typically include information on your background, career goals and work experience, and why you want to attend the specific school.
