What Is on an IRSC College Placement Test?

Students planning to attend Florida's Indian River State College (IRSC) are required to take a college placement test. This test places students into college courses according to their abilities.
  1. Format

    • The IRSC placement test is a computer adaptive test. The test increases in difficulty as the student provides the correct answer to each question. The test is not timed, and allows the student to work at his own pace.

    Subjects

    • The placement test covers three main subjects. The Reading Comprehension test gauges the student's ability to analyze a text. The Sentence Skills test gauges the student's knowledge of grammar, punctuation and word choice. The Elementary Algebra test gauges the student's basic mathematical skills.

    College-Level Mathematics

    • Should the student score a 90 to 120 on Elementary Algebra, she is eligible to take the College-Level Mathematics test This tests the student on more advanced mathematical subjects, such as algebraic operations, coordinate geometry and trigonometry. A high score on this test qualifies the student to take advanced math courses.

    Length

    • The Reading Comprehension, Sentence Skills and College-Level Mathematics tests consist of 20 questions each. The Elementary Algebra test consists of 12 questions.

    Scores

    • Scores from 20 to 120 are acceptable for the Reading Comprehension, Sentence Structure and Elementary Algebra tests. The College-Level Mathematics test requires a score of 30 to 120 to place.
