All students wishing to attend Lane Community College must receive admission to the college. The first step is filling out an online admission application. You will need your personal information, such as your social security number, to complete the application. Students wishing to receive financial aid can fill out an online application. After completing the online portion you can schedule to take the college's mandatory placement test to determine any prerequisite course required before taking college-level courses. A meeting with a school counselor will determine the best available direction to satisfy all the requirements of the nursing program. Your counselor will schedule an orientation and then you can register for classes.
Lane has standard prerequisites that you must meet before you are granted admission into the nursing program. You must have completed a total of 45 credit hours in specified classes before applying, including Anatomy & Physiology I, II and III, upper-level math, English composition, nutrition, social sciences and general electives. Potential students are also required to pass a basic computer competency test, background check, physical, immunizations and maintain personal heath insurance.
Once all scholastic prerequisites are met, students will have to submit an online application and $50 fee to the school. You must attach all transcripts from Lane and transfer credits from other institutions to the application. Then all approved applicants are scheduled for an essay, which the faculty evaluates before final acceptance is given into the nursing program. All nursing students are expected to meet the physical and mental requirements of nursing---standing for long periods of time, continually lifting and bending and coping with the job's stress.
Receiving an associate degree in nursing requires completion of the regimented 2-year, six-semester program. Almost all courses are required to be taken in sequential order. The first year concentrates heavily on the foundations of nursing, general biological sciences, anatomy and physiology. The second year places emphasis on more specific areas of nursing, such as chronic and acute illnesses. You must complete clinical labs and practicums throughout the program. A total of 90 credit hours and satisfactory grades are required for graduation.
Completion of Lane's nursing program qualifies you to take the NCLEX-RN exam. Passing the NCLEX, directed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, certifies individuals as registered nurses.
