Complete high school core level classes before applying to a Minnesota college, university or trade school. Core classes include four years of English with emphasis on writing, reading, speaking and appreciation and understanding of literary works; three years of math (elementary algebra, geometry and intermediate algebra); three years of biology and physical science, including lab work; three years of social studies including history, world history, geography, global studies or western civilization; two years of a second language and one year of visual or performing arts (band, chorus, orchestra, music, art, drawing, graphic design, painting or theater).
Consult with the admissions counselor at the school to which you are applying before making any changes to your last year of high school's curriculum and before you enroll in the university, community college or technical school program. Also, talk to the school's financial aid counselor to find out how to apply for federal and state government grants, government or private loans and scholarships to help pay for your tuition, books and living arrangements.
Submit GED test scores or high school transcripts and any required ACT or SAT scores with your enrollment application in advance of the enrollment date together with any fees. In order to be considered for acceptance by any of the seven state Minnesota Universities, you will need a score of 21 or higher on the ACT test or a score of 1,000 or higher on the SAT. Private Minnesota universities may have slightly different requirements; you should check directly with the school's enrollment counselor. Community and technical colleges in Minnesota require a GED or high school diploma for admissions and do not require standardized test scores or look at your grades. They do require you take a placement test once you have been admitted to determine what courses are appropriate for you to take at their school in reading, writing and math, so it is recommended that you take the high school core level basic courses. You can obtain enrollment requirements and forms by visiting the school's website or requesting the information by mail, visiting the school or calling them or by using the universal Minnesota enrollment form available online, which can be used for enrollment at any of the 32 Minnesota State colleges and universities. You may qualify for waiver of the enrollment fee by speaking to the school's admission's office directly.
Wait for the Minnesota school's decision. They will notify you if they are missing any information. Be sure to respond immediately by forwarding any items requested. You will receive a letter advising you whether you have have been admitted, wait listed or denied.
