The TOEFL is the most commonly accepted standardized English-language proficiency test, according to the nonprofit that administers it and other tests. Unlike other tests, the TOEFL focuses on and assesses a student's ability to comprehend and speak English in an academic setting.
Most colleges require Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) and/or American College Test (ACT) scores from all applicants. However, community colleges do not require these tests. For non-native English speakers, community colleges only require a TOEFL score, which demonstrates an understanding and comprehension of the English language. Community colleges are public two-year higher education institutions open to everyone within the community. The offer associates degrees, certifications and diplomas, but do not offer bachelor's degrees.
While some graduate programs require only TOEFL scores, the majority of programs require Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores in addition to TOEFL scores. Applicants who received a bachelor's degree at a non-English speaking college or university are required to take the TOEFL and provide scores. All graduate applicants also have to provide a transcript from their undergraduate study. Check with the specific university and program department for admission requirements.
There are English-language tests available other than the TOEFL. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is similar to the TOEFL, except that it requires a face-to-face interview with an examiner. Some colleges and universities do not accept IELTS scores. Another test is the Test Of English for International Communication (TOEIC), which specifically measures English language skills in the workplace. As a workplace assessment the TOEIC is not accepted by most colleges and universities.
