For this project students use a software program such as Photoshop to create their own prints. Colors and images are manipulated to make a unique fabric pattern, and then the students print the designs out on treated fabric. From here, students make a pattern of their choice and create an article of clothing with their chosen print.
Students are encouraged to study various pattern-making processes of the past and the history behind them, such as those of the Victorian era. Their job is then to create a modern costume using the same type of patterns, but not using the eloquent materials used in these past creations. Instead, they use only raw muslin and burlap. The patterns and stitching of the past and the modern type of material create a paradox that make this project unique.
Every potential designer needs a portfolio. A major project that is often ongoing throughout fashion design school is the creation of a fashion portfolio. This portfolio should contain sketches of project ideas as well as professional-grade pictures of finished collections. Include at least three to five separate collections to show your diversity and unique style.
Create an inspiration page using a collage of images that represent colors, themes and styles. These images can come from magazines, the Internet or a student's own drawings. Complete the project by drawing a number of sketches that portray the theme behind the inspiration page.
