The Health Promotion course assists the nurse in helping patients to lead a healthier life, rather than focusing solely on treating illness and disease. Students learn about disease prevention and how proper nutrition can help prevent disease and maintain good health. The Health Promotion course includes detailed information on providing this type of care to special groups such as children, the elderly and those who are permanently disabled.
Working with patients requires the registered nurse to have knowledge of medication, drug interactions and effects of drugs. In the Nursing Pharmacology course, students become familiar with the different types of medication and drugs they will encounter in their career. Drugs and medication are used continually during diagnosis and treatment of the patient, making this important knowledge for registered nursing students.
Registered nurses take a course in maternity nursing to learn about women's health in general but also focus on reproductive health and pregnancy health. Students learn to care for the mother throughout the pregnancy and childbearing process. Some maternity nursing programs may also teach about high-risk births and pregnancies.
