To apply to NYU's bachelor's degree program in nursing, students must submit an application. The process is very competitive, so a strong academic history, competitive previous grades, strong letters of reference and a compelling personal statement are helpful. In addition, students must meet the college's technical standards for core professional nursing competency performance to be eligible for admission. Students also must meet several requirements for admission to advanced nursing degree programs, such as experience in the field and competitive scores on relevant exams, such as the Graduate Record Exam.
The NYU College of Nursing was founded in 1932. The college's nursing programs are available in the heart of Greenwich Village, providing students with both academic and cultural resources. In addition, the area surrounding the nursing program includes more than 100 clinical health care organizations, and the faculty members in the program are recognized both nationally and internationally. The college of nursing is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC), according to the All Nursing Schools website.
Prerequisites for the college's bachelor's degree program in nursing include classes such as anatomy and physiology, chemistry with lab, microbiology, nutrition and developmental psychology. Courses in the program cover topics such as fundamentals of nursing practice, pathophysiology, adult health nursing, nursing pharmacotherapeutics and community health nursing. Through the training, students are prepared to pass the licensing exam for registered nurses. The college also offers an accelerated 15-month bachelor's degree program.
Students can obtain their nursing master's degrees in just four semesters if they are full-time students or in three years if they attend school part-time. The courses teach advanced physical assessment, leadership/practice management and clinical decision-making. Following the program, students can sit for the American Nurses Credentialing Center examination for various certifications. Students also can choose to earn dual degrees in global public health and nursing or in nursing administration and public administration with a focus on finance, management or policy. Post-master's advanced certificate programs also are available at the school.
A dual degree program also is available in which students can obtain both their bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing. These students also can study abroad at the college's international programs in Chile and Florence, where they can complete a nursing course during a winter intersession. To enter the dual degree program, students must have a 2.7 grade point average minimum and then have a 3.0 average minimum at the time they complete the bachelor's portion and are ready to move on to the master's degree portion.
With a doctoral degree in nursing practice from NYU, students learn to determine how to use research evidence in practice and facilitate changes that improve quality of health care services. Classes cover epidemiology, genomics across the life span, current issues in health policy and financial management for health care organizations. Students in this program complete a capstone project and internship. The program spans five semesters. To be eligible for the program, students' grade point averages must be at least 3.5.
