  1. University of Maryland at Baltimore

    • The University of Maryland at Baltimore College of Dental Surgery was founded in 1840 by Horace Hayden and Chapin Harris as the world's first major college for dentistry. Students may opt for a bachelor's or master's degree in dental hygiene, as well as a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Graduate work is available in areas such as oral and craniofacial sciences and experimental pathology. The school dedicated a separate building for dental classes in 2006.

    Harvard School of Dental Medicine

    • The Harvard School of Dental Medicine was founded in 1867 by James Conant as the first university-affiliated dental college in the United States. The School of Dental Medicine is part of Harvard's graduate school network, but is the smallest school at Harvard with only 280 students. Areas of study include orthodontics, endodontics, prosthodontics, periodontics and advanced general dentistry education. Students may also select from hospital-based programs including oral and maxillofacial surgery, pediatric dentistry and general practice residency.

    University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio

    • The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio was founded in 1970 and annually accepts around 100 students with 90% going on to complete their degrees. The school offers a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, as well as advanced certificates for those with a DDS or DMD degree. The school is divided into several departments: community dentistry, dental diagnostic science, endodontics, general dentistry, oral and maxillofacial dentistry, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, prosthodontics, and restorative dentistry. Students may participate in clinical rotations during their junior and senior years. Although anyone may apply, preference is given to Texas residents.
