    • Tennessee State University is the only publicly funded, historically black college in Tennessee. The campus is 500 acres in downtown Nashville. Total enrollment is more than 9,000 with an average class size of 19 students. TSU offers associate's degrees in nursing and dental hygiene, 42 baccalaureate degrees, 21 master's and six doctoral degrees. The TSU Tigers have a thriving athletic department with teams that compete in the Ohio Valley Conference, including football, basketball, golf, tennis and track.

    Vanderbilt University

    • Vanderbilt University, with a total enrollment of more than 12,000 students, is the largest university in Nashville and the largest private employer in middle Tennessee. The main campus is 330 acres just 1.5 miles from downtown Nashville. Vanderbilt has 11 different schools and offers bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in a full range of subjects. The student to professor ratio is 8 to 1 for undergraduate students. The Vanderbilt Medical Center has a large presence in the middle Tennessee area and is home to a cancer center. The Vanderbilt Commodores are six men's and nine women's intercollegiate teams in the Southeastern Conference. Vanderbilt's Memorial Gymnasium hosts basketball games with a capacity of 14,316. Vanderbilt Stadium seats 39,773 for football.

    Belmont University

    • Belmont University, with an enrollment 5,400, is the second largest university in Tennessee and the largest Christian university in Tennessee. Belmont has seven bachelor's degrees with more than 75 academic majors, 20 master's degrees and three doctoral programs. Student to professor ratio at this private school is 13 to 1. The university also offers adult degree completion programs. The Belmont Bruins are the school's NCAA Division I basketball team. The Curb Event Center is a 5,000-seat arena where the Bruins play, as well as home to concerts and the CMT music awards. Belmont has the only AACSB International accredited music program in the world with notable alumni such as Brad Paisley, Pam Tillis, Lee Ann Womack, Trisha Yearwood and four American Idol finalists.

    Fisk University

    • Fisk University is private, liberal arts, historically black college affiliated with the United Church of Christ. Fisk has the distinction of graduating more African Americans who have continued on to receive PhDs than any other college in the United States. The university has an enrollment around 700, and has a 12 to 1 student to professor ratio. Fisk offers bachelors and masters degrees in arts and science, as well as joint study programs for engineering with Vanderbilt University.
