Cornell University established the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine in 1894 and even offered veterinary courses prior to the founding of the college, thus making the institution a pioneer in the field of veterinary medicine. The veterinary medicine curriculum has two kinds of courses: foundation courses and distribution courses. Foundation courses comprise about 70 percent of the curriculum and include studies focusing on the animal body, genetics and neurobiology. Distribution courses account for the remaining 30 percent of the curriculum and allow for flexibility and specialization.
