List of Four Year Universities in Georgia

Georgia residents who want to pursue higher education opportunities at four-year colleges won't have to go very far from home to accomplish this goal. The state has some of the oldest colleges in the United States among its private and public educational offerings. It also has women-only schools as well as top-ranked colleges for African-Americans.
  1. Agnes Scott College

    • Agnes Scott College in Decatur is a small liberal arts women's college that is associated with the Presbyterian Church. It has less than 1,000 students. Founded in 1889, the school has a ratio of nine students for every faculty member; class size averages 13. It offers 34 undergraduate majors, as well as degrees in pre-law and pre-medicine. Its graduates have won prestigious fellowships, including Rhodes and Fulbright. (See Reference 1)

    University of Georgia

    • At the other end of the size spectrum, the University of Georgia is the state's largest university with more than 34,000 students. It also is the state's oldest. The college was incorated in 1785, but did not admit students until 1801, with the first class graduating in 1804. (Reference 2) Its college of arts and sciences was established in 1801, and its law school started in 1859. The School of Public Health was added in 2005, making it the last of the university's 15 colleges and schools. The university offers 22 bachelor's degrees in 120 fields, master's degrees in 124 fields and doctoral degrees in 91 areas.

    Clark Atlanta University

    • Clark Atlanta University was formed in 1988 when Atlanta University, founded in 1865, and Clark College, founded in 1869, joined forces. The university is a private co-educational school with a student body that is predominantly African-American. It is associated with the United Methodist Church. It is the largest of the 39 schools belonging to the United Negro College Fund. (Reference 3) It has 38 major study areas, with the most popular including business, biology, criminal justice and psychology.

    Georgia Southern University

    • With 17,000 students, Georgia Southern University is the largest college in the southeastern section of the state. Founded in 1906, Georgia Southern has more than 130 degree programs for bachelor, master and doctoral degrees. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classifies the university as a doctoral/research institution. (Reference 4) It is part of the state university system.
