  1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology

    • In 2010, U.S. News & World Report ranked the Massachusetts Institute of Technology the best engineering school in the United States. Throughout its history, which extends back to 1861, the school has produced 25 Nobel Prize winners, 44 Rhodes Scholars and 55 Marshall Scholars. The school employs more than 1,000 faculty members. As of 2009-2010, the school was home to 6,152 graduate students and 4,232 undergraduates.

    Stanford University

    • According to U.S. News & World Report's 2010 rankings, Stanford University has the second-best engineering school in the country. Stanford's engineering department offers majors in aeronautics and astronautics, bioengineering, chemical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, management science and engineering, materials science and engineering and mechanical engineering. The faculty includes a Nobel Prize winner, two Kyoto Prize winners, a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences, 79 members of the National Academy of Engineering and 15 members of the National Academy of Sciences.

    • Berkeley's college of engineering offers programs in bioengineering; civil and environmental engineering; electrical engineering and computer sciences; industrial engineering and operations research; materials science and engineering; mechanical engineering; and nuclear engineering.
