Role of College Counselors

One of the first major, independent leaps a young person can make is to head off to college. Leaving the comfort of a childhood home to embark on a new phase of life is not only overwhelming, but exciting. Universities do their best to aid in the guidance of young people, and specific departments work directly with students to help them find their way. College counselors can be a young student's best ally.
  1. Those First Steps

    • Graduating high school students spend many hours and dollars trying to gain acceptance to universities. With all of the hoops that there are to jump through, it's helpful to have someone in the know working toward the same goal. College counselors are available to young people taking the collegiate step in an effort to assist in researching the best schools, collecting the necessary references, applying for admittance, and choosing a program. Counselors may work for a specific university or be independent contractors. Either way, their goal is to help clear the muddy waters and help the student find answers.

    Personal Issues

    • When the young person has been accepted to a college and becomes a college student, the college counselor roll changes. Transitioning to the college level can inspire a wealth of emotions. Good and bad, the college counselor is available to help the new student's transition easier.

    Career Questions

    • Counselors want to help put a student on the path to success. A major decision to starting that journey is finding and choosing a career. College counselors can provide a student with career ideas and options that the student may have never considered. They also can find the corresponding degree plan to help the student achieve her goals.

    Academic Concerns

    • When, and if, grades begin to slip or a new direction is chosen, a college counselor can reformulate a plan to get the student back on track or moving in a new and positive direction.

    Success

    • Ultimately, the role of a college counselor is to help a student succeed. In helping a young student develop understanding of the world around him, the college counselor is arming them with as many tools to work with as possible.
