Located in the capital region, Ottawa's Algonquin College offers an intensive 2-year program that teaches students about pre-hospital emergency treatment. Emphasis is placed on training each student on clinical reasoning skills necessary to identify and treat medical and traumatic emergencies. The program goes beyond medical training, realizing that the ability to communicate effectively with patients, family members, and health care professionals is as important as the treatment itself. Upon completion, students are eligible to take the Ontario Advanced Emergency Medical Care Attendant (A-EMCA) examination to gain accreditation.

Alberta Health and Safety Training Institute offers a 140-hour program that combines independent study and instructor-guided learning. Through lecture and lab practice, the 90-hour classroom portion focuses on skills required to work as members of the EMS community. Students are required to complete an additional 50 hours of independent home study, prior to the first day of classes, using course material provided by the institute. Topic areas are first presented by examining the theory related to a particular injury followed by the practical aspect of emergency care for that injury. Upon successful completion of the course, students are eligible to take the Alberta College of Paramedic's EMR registration exam to gain accreditation.
