Meteorologists may work as forecasters for television news shows, as research scientists or in one of several government agencies.     • The University of Oklahoma School of Meteorology is located in the National Weather Center building that opened in 2006. Students have access to state-of-the-art facilities in the building, which also houses several federal organizations. Degrees offered include a bachelor of science in meteorology, master of meteorology and Ph.D. in meteorology. Classes include physical mechanics, severe and unusual weather, global climate change and societal impacts and aviation meteorology. Students are encouraged to participate in one of the several student organizations, including Oklahoma Weather Lab and the student chapter of the American Meteorological Society.

    Pennsylvania State University

    • The Pennsylvania State University's Department of Meteorology offers several degree options: a bachelor of science in meteorology with concentrations in either air quality studies, atmospheric chemistry, environmental meteorology, weather risk management, weather forecasting and communications or climatology. Master's and Ph.D. programs are offered in traditional meteorology and atmospheric science specialties such as atmospheric dynamics, air chemistry and atmospheric business and policy. The average enrollment for the school is about 300 undergraduate and 60 full-time graduate students. The school is home to the largest student-run weather station in the country.

    Texas A&M University

    • Texas A&M University offers a bachelor's degree in meteorology and master's and Ph.D. degrees in atmospheric science. Class offerings include weather forecasting, weather observation and analysis, atmospheric dynamics and physical and regional climatology. Students get hands-on experience with radar operation, weather balloons, data forecasting and ground station operation. Participation in student organizations is encouraged. These groups include the Texas Aggie Storm Chasers, Weather Broadcasting and the student chapter of the American Meteorological Society.
