Food Engineering Colleges

Food engineers are an essential part of food production. Engineering principles are used to make more effective and environmentally friendly methods of food creation, distribution and handling. A degree is required to become a food engineer and many colleges in the United States offer a variety of major concentrations and degree levels from which incoming students may choose.
    • The University of Ohio offers a Bachelor of Science in Food, Agriculture and Biological Engineering. The program is designed for those entering the engineering profession and teaches students ways to effectively help the environment and improve products and by-products related to food production. The curriculum includes a broad sampling of classes including the social sciences, arts, humanities and the technical and scientific portion of engineering. Internships are not required but are strongly recommended. Upon graduation, students will be prepared for jobs in food engineering, bio-environmental engineering, ecological engineering and other related fields.

    The University of Illinois

    • The University of Illinois' College of Engineering offers an Agricultural & Biological Engineering program. As the university's website explains, there are "two options for undergraduates which include a 4-year program administered by the College of Engineering or a 5-year program that combines agricultural and biological engineering and agricultural science." Within the chosen program, students can chose a more specialized area of expertise including Food and Bioprocess Engineering.

Within the program, students will develop and test new food products, design and evaluate new processes for manufacturing food products, evaluate energy efficiencies and analyze environmental factors in food production.

    Cornell University

    • Cornell University offers a master's and doctorate program in Food Science and Technology. Within the program, students can chose to major in food engineering, dairy science or food processing, in addition to other similar concentrations. All graduate students are required to complete a seminar presentation and assist in the teaching program for one semester.

To apply to the program, incoming students must have a background in biology, biochemistry, chemistry or microbiology. Prior training and experience in the field is an added plus. All students must take the GREs and send their scores to the institution.
