How to Buy Research Chemicals

Buying chemicals to be used in a research group or laboratory is a simple process but requires advanced authorization from the group's or laboratory's authorized personnel. Also, depending on the chemical in question, you may need additional safety training and handling in order to buy the chemicals. The best way to find out whether or not you have authorization to order chemicals is by asking the private investigator of the laboratory and the laboratory supply store at the university.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the laboratory supply store at the university or research institution. All universities typically order chemicals from one, or a specific group of, vendors.

    • 2

Determine how the order will be paid for. Most research groups will have an account set up at the laboratory supply store which will disperse funds to complete the order. These accounts are typically funded via grants by institutions such as the National Science Foundation. Consult with the private investigator of the laboratory group to determine funding sources.

    • 3

Complete an order form with the laboratory supply store with the exact name of the chemicals, the product numbers and the quantity of each chemical. You must be authorized by the private investigator to order from the laboratory supply store and to use account funding. All chemical supply stores have their own order forms, so there is not a standard form.
