Sound Design Graduate Programs

Effective graduate level sound design programs prepare students for entry into the audio production field. Students can expect to work with dialogue and sound effects. Graduates who complete these graduate programs typically find work as dialogue editors, game audio designers, production mixers, location sound specialists for film and supervising sound editors.
  1. University of California- San Diego

    • The University of California at San Diego's Department of Visual Design features six performance spaces producing twelve plays or concerts per season. It also has a full professional shop staff, sound lab and post-production studio. Students learn to use technology and skills relevant to the field, including advanced computing and audio production. In the first year of this program, students attend design and collaborative classes. Examples of design courses are scenic, sound, costume and light design. The collaborative courses give students the opportunity to work closely with actors, directors, playwrights, and stage managers. .

    Savannah College of Art and Design

    • The sound design program at Savannah College of Art and Design offers Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Arts, and Master of Fine Arts degrees. It also offers a minor concentration for undergraduate students with other majors. The campus, located in Savannah, Georgia, features advanced technology including ten HD Pro Tools labs, two dedicated surround sound mix/mastering rooms, a MIDI lab complete with full range of synthesis and sampling technology, two classrooms housing twenty Pro Tools LE workstations, a recording studio for music production, a scoring stage and two suites for dialog recording and editing.

    Purdue University

    • The sound design program at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana is offered through the school's College of Liberal Arts. There are a limited number of applicants selected for this program per year so it is important to apply well before the deadline, otherwise your application may never even be looked at. Several areas of study make up the core curriculum at Purdue. These include consulting, music theory, music history, sound design and audio technology and electrical engineering. One fully-realized design project per semester is required of students enrolled in this program. This program results in a Master of Fine Arts in Sound Design degree. Students take at minimum 60 credit hours to complete the degree.
