List of Technical Universities in Germany

As one of the world's biggest manufacturing countries and in 2010 the world's second-largest exporter, Germany has a long tradition with engineering, technology and manufacturing. As a result it has some of the world's best technical universities. Many universities in Germany are called Technical Universities and at one time they restricted their teaching to technical and engineering subjects. Today, however, they offer a range of subjects and you will often see humanities and arts courses now being taught.
  1. Technical University Munich

    • Ranked as the 35th best university in the world by the Global University Rankings in 2009, the Technical University of Munich is one of Germany's top universities. In 2009 it had around 21,000 students of which 3,700 were foreign. The university offers a total of 45 undergraduate degrees throughout its 13 departments. These departments include architecture, business administration, chemistry, civil engineering and surveying, electrical and electronic engineering, informatics, mathematics, mechanical engineering, medicine, physics, sports science, education and life and food science.

    Hamburg University of Technology

    • The Hamburg University of Technology is one of the younger universities in Germany, having opened its doors to students for the first time in 1982, two years after it started the first of its research activities. In 2009 the university had 5,000 students and a total of 100 professors and 500 academic staff. As a result the university has a very high staff-to-student ratio. Undergraduate degree programs consist of general engineering science, civil and environmental engineering, bioprocess engineering, computational informatics, electrical engineering, energy and environment engineering, computer science and engineering, logistics and mobility, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, naval architecture and chemical engineering. The university also offers international academic programs, which are compatible with an Anglo/American higher education system. The course involves a bachelor's degree course plus a choice of 11 master's courses, all of which are taught in English.

    Technical University of Berlin

    • Established in 1879, the Technical University of Berlin is the 62nd-best engineering and technology university in the world in 2009, according to the Times QS World University Rankings. In 2010 the university had 27,000 students of which 5,500 were international. The university is not a campus-style institution and is instead spread out across Berlin in various different locations with the main building based in Charlottenburg.

      In total there are seven different faculties in the university offering more than 50 different degree programs. The faculties include humanities, mathematics and natural sciences, process sciences, electrical engineering and computer science, mechanical engineering and transport systems, planning and economics and management.
