Colleges That Offer a Public Relations Major

If you love working behind the scenes for big events, a career in public relations might be ideal for you. The first step in getting into that career is going to a college that offers a public relations major. Buffalo State College, Syracuse University and the University of Southern California are accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, and they are located near cities that have significant entertainment events.

    • Buffalo State College is a four-year, public college that offers a Bachelor of Art in Public Communication with a specialization in public relations. The college is one of four undergraduate schools in New York that have an accredited program. It offers a 120-hour program that requires 39 to 66 hours of a general education foundation, 12 hours of a communication core, 18 hours in public relations, a three-hour senior seminar, nine hours of communication electives, and 12 to 39 hours in college electives. Graduate students can pursue a Master of Science in Multidisciplinary Studies with a specialization in public relations management. Another option is the non-degree certificate in public relations management.

    Syracuse University

    • Syracuse University is a four-year, private college that offers a bachelor's and master's in public relations in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. The program claims to be one of the oldest and most prestigious in the country. The bachelor's degree in public relations requires 36 hours in the major including news writing and graphic arts. The 13-month Master of Science in Public Relations program has a thesis and non-thesis track. A comprehensive exam is required for the non-thesis track. Graduates have gone on to have titles as directors and presidents of companies, including Deutsche Bank, A&E Network and US Airways.

    University of Southern California

    • University of Southern California is a four-year, private college that offers a Bachelor of Art in Public Relations and a Master of Art in Strategic Public Relations in the Annenberg School for Communication. The bachelor's program requires eight classes for your core understanding of journalism. You must take a 400-level course in public relations, six hours of upper-level journalism electives and general education. The master's degree is a 40-hour program that requires 18 core units in public relations and an additional 22 hours of elective units that are in your area of specific interest.
