Forensic Psychology Schools in Ft. Lauderdale

Forensic psychology is a field incorporating psychology and criminal justice. Forensic psychologists study the psychological perspectives of crime and apply them to law. They also treat mentally ill criminals. There are a limited number of forensic psychology degree programs; however, there are many psychology and criminal justice programs that focus on forensic psychology aspects. Fort Lauderdale in Florida, located on the southeast Atlantic coast, is the home to a handful of schools offering degree programs with coursework in forensic psychology.

    • As the seventh-largest nonprofit university in the country, Nova Southeastern University maintains a focus on research, particularly in the fields of the physical and social sciences. The Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences provides degrees in psychology, sociology, paralegal studies and criminal justice. Forensic psychology is offered as a minor at the undergraduate level with 18 credits. It is offered to any major. Dual admission is also offered by the university with options to double major in mental health counseling, psychology, criminal justice, law or conflict analysis and resolution. Dual admission is also available at the graduate level, with the opportunity to earn both a criminal justice degree and psychology degree. The psychology degree includes one of four focus options, including mental health counseling, school psychology, research based psychology or clinically based psychology.

    Kaiser University

    • Kaiser University is one of the largest independent, career-focused universities in Florida. Kaiser's main campus is in Fort Lauderdale with programs in health care, education, culinary arts, computers and technology, business and legal studies. Degrees in criminal justice are offered at the undergraduate and graduate degree level. Undergraduate programs include the Associate of Arts in criminal justice, Associate of Science in crime scene technology and the Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice. These programs include related forensic psychology coursework such as criminal investigations, criminology and criminal law. The Master of Arts in criminal justice degree program provides courses in these concepts in addition to research methods, juvenile justice and a research course in gender, race and crime.

    • Florida Atlantic University was the first public university in southeast Florida and the first upper division college--meaning it does not offer the first two years of undergraduate study--in the nation. The school places a large emphasis on research, contributing to medical cures and technology. Undergraduate and graduate programs are offered in both psychology and criminal justice. The B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in psychology consists of required coursework and a research focus in evolutionary psychology, which is an area in forensic psychology with topics like violence, conflict and homicide are included. Criminal justice and criminology are offered in bachelor's and master's degree programs with required coursework in victimology, crime in schools and crime prevention.
