The Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the discipline. Undergraduates are instructed in a broad array of coursework grounded in the basics of medical imaging in addition to anatomy, pathology and radiology. The John Hopkins School of Medical Imaging offers a 14-month certificate program in nuclear medicine technology. The course provides students with a combination of lecture coursework in image diagnostics and clinical experience. Topics covered include SPECT and PET imaging, radiopharmacy, in vitro procedures and therapeutic nuclear medicine applications. Graduating students are eligible to participate in nationally recognized certification examinations.

Prince George's Community College of Largo, Maryland, offers an Associate of Applied Science degree with a concentration in nuclear medicine technology. Students are instructed in the use of specialized equipment such as scintillation detectors, gamma cameras and other imaging technology. Core coursework surveys clinical nuclear medicine technology, radiopharmacy and radiation chemistry and nuclear medical terminology. Clinical training takes place at several facilities, such as Prince George's Hospital Center and Georgetown University Hospital.
