California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) is a campus of about 35,000 students in the Los Angeles metro area. This school offers a family and consumer science bachelor's degree with a major in child development and family studies. Students with child development majors have the opportunity to work in the department's Child and Family Center, which provides educational programs for toddlers between the ages of 18 months and 3 years and preschoolers between 3 and 5 years.

Mills College is an undergraduate women's school near San Francisco with about 1,500 students. The college's Department of Education offers a child development major in conjunction with the psychology department. Students can choose to participate in the college's laboratory school for early childhood education, or to volunteer in other clinical settings. Additionally, the school offers what they call a 4+1 master's program in which graduates of the early childhood education program can earn their master's degree in one year. Students must apply to this program at the end of their junior year.

San Francisco State University is part of the California State University system and has approximately 30,000 students in graduate and undergraduate programs. The university's College of Health and Human Services offers a child development major for undergraduates. There are four concentrations for this major: young child and family; school-age child and family; youth and family services; and research and public policy. An internship or fieldwork is a requirement for graduation, and students must commit at least 120 hours to these projects.
