The Department of Education regularly offers grants each year to colleges who initiate programs to prevent or reduce drug and alcohol abuse on campus. In 2009, grant opportunities included the Models of Exemplary, Effective and Promising Alcohol or Other Drug Abuse Prevention Programs on College Campuses Grant Competition and the Grant Competition to Prevent High-Risk Drinking or Violent Behavior Among College Students. Awards ranged from $100,000 to $150,000 per winning campus.
Every year the Department of Justice's Community Oriented Policing Services program offers grants for the Secure Our Schools program. The grant is oriented toward primary and secondary education, but colleges and universities are also welcome to apply. The grant provides funding at a maximum of $500,000 to develop resources for school safety, including installation of metal detectors, locks, lighting, and other crime deterrents, security assessments, security training for staff and students, and coordination with local law enforcement.
Colleges and universities can apply for funding from programs designed for community-based violence prevention, if efforts to improve campus safety are carried out in coordination with neighborhood efforts. The Community-Based Violence Prevention Program offers up to $1,000,000 for implementing effective practices to reduce violence in communities.
The Department of Justice offers annual funding for its Grants to Reduce Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Dating Violence and Stalking on Campus Program. The program is designed to strengthen security and strategies to prevent and prosecute violent crimes against women on college campuses, as well as to bolster on-campus victim services. Funding is awarded at a maximum of $500,000.
