What Are Some Significant Safety Issues on a College Campus?

Every fall, parents pack their students for college and hope they're leaving them in a safe setting. Unfortunately, safety on college campuses isn't always ensured. College campuses can be the site of sexual crimes and alcohol- and drug-related incidents, among other issues. Crimes can also happen off campus, in off-campus student housing.
  1. Sexual Crimes

    • Rape represents a huge safety concern on college campuses. According to the 2009 National Crime Victims' Rights Week Resource Guide, 12 percent of college women reported being raped in 2009, and 20 percent reported being harassed or stalked.

    Substance Abuse

    • Drug and alcohol use is another factor that impacts college campus safety. The Harvard School of Public Health's Alcohol Study, conducted over 14 years, found that binge drinking greatly impacted student academic performances. Fraternity and sorority parties are associated with heavy drinking.

    Other Crimes

    • College campuses make national news when violent crime occurs, including mass shootings. Other crimes found on college campuses include robberies and battery.
