How to Count Frames of Microfiche

Microfiche is a document storage format that allows large texts to be displayed from a single card. Microfiche is about the size of a note card. It is still used in many college and university libraries, but there is an effort to digitize most microfiche. Microfiche can be read by placing the card into a microfiche reader. It can be digitized by a microfiche scanner which converts each individual frame into an image or PDF.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the microfiche reader. There is usually a button on the left side of the machine. It will take a couple seconds for the machine to start.

    • 2

Pull the tray out from under the lens. A glass panel will rise.

    • 3

Place the microfiche under the glass panel. The microfiche should be label side up.

    • 4

Push the tray back in. The glass panel will lock into place and text will appear on the screen.

    • 5

Position the tray so that the first frame is displayed.

    • 6

Pull the tray out slowly counting the frames as they pass by the screen. Write down the total.

    • 7

Position the tray so that the first frame is visible again.

    • 8

Move the tray sideways counting the frames as they pass by the screen.

    • 9

Multiply the two numbers together. This is the total number of frames on the microfiche.
