How to Copy From Microfiche

Microfiche is 4 by 6 transparent cards often used in libraries to store newspaper archives and government documents. The tiny print on these cards allows libraries to store large amounts of information without taking up too much shelf space. Special microfiche readers allow researchers to read the information on these cards easily and comfortably. Since most patrons don't have microfiche readers at home, libraries often offer onsite microfiche readers/printers, which allow patrons to print information from the cards and take it home with them.

Instructions

    • 1

Flip the microfiche reader's power switch to turn it on.

    • 2

Pull the microfiche tray towards you. A pane of glass should rise automatically. Place the microfiche under the glass and replace the drawer. The exact method for doing this varies on different readers. Instructions are usually posted on the machine. If you are having trouble, ask a reference librarian to assist you.

    • 3

Slide the fiche tray back and forth to view enlarged information on the machine's monitor. Use the zoom knob or button to zoom in and out on the image, and use the focus knob to clarify the information. The image on your monitor is the same exact image that will appear on your printout, so make sure everything is in focus and centered properly before you decide to print.

    • 4

Check the paper tray in your printer to make sure you have enough paper to print your image.

    • 5

Press the print button to print your image. You may need to insert coins or a printing card at the library's copy station.
