Associate Degrees in Aviation

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the demand for pilots and flight engineers will increase by 12 percent from 2008 through 2018. A minimum of an associate degree in aviation is necessary to work for most airlines as well as for commercial or charter aviation companies. A number of colleges throughout the United States offer such programs and also allow students to earn their piloting licenses simultaneously with their degrees.
  1. Wallace State Community College

    • Wallace State Community College is a public, two-year college in Hanceville, Alabama, approximately 44 miles north of Birmingham, Alabama. The college opened in 1966 and has approximately 6,000 students. The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the Associate in Arts has accredited the college.

      The college grants an associate of applied science degree in aviation that requires two years to complete. Students in the program have the option to study airplane or helicopter piloting. Both programs require coursework in algebra, computer science, meteorology and instrumentation. Students must then complete nine laboratory training courses that combine ground and in-flight instruction. Graduates from the associate degree in aviation program at Wallace State Community College graduate with their private pilot, instrument rating, commercial and flight instructor licenses for the specific type of aircraft they choose to study.

      Eligible students at Wallace State Community College can receive federal and state loans and grants, institutional scholarships and work-study placements. Job placement assistance is available.

    Orange Coast College

    • A two-year, community college, Orange Coast College is in Costa Mesa, California, around 42 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Established in 1948, the school serves as home to more than 25,000 students each year. The college has accreditation through the Commission on Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

      Orange Coast College's aviation program grants an Associate in Science degree and takes 24 months to finish with full-time study. Among the courses featured in the program are meteorology, navigation, cockpit management, composition, mathematics, aerodynamics and social sciences like psychology. Classes occur in classrooms, in front of flight simulators and in the air in the college-owned aircraft. Graduates will have earned private, instrument, commercial and multi-engine licenses by the completion of the program.

      Orange Coast College participates in federal and state financial aid programs and offers a limited number of institutional scholarships and work-study placements. The school offers job placement assistance to all graduate. An on-site daycare provides low-cost child care for students' children.

    Duchess Community College

    • Duchess Community College is part of the public State University of New York system of schools. The college has more than 8,000 students enrolled in its programs and is located in Poughkeepsie, New York, about 83 miles north of New York City. The Middle States Association of Schools and College has accredited the college.

      The college's Associate of Science degree program in aviation requires two years of full time study to complete. Courses required for the program include aviation history, English, weather and climate, physics, calculus, aviation law and sociology. Students graduate with private, commercial, single engine and instrumentation pilots' licenses.

      Among the financial aid opportunities at Duchess Community College are state and federal loans and grants, scholarships, work-study and veterans' benefits. The career Service department helps with job searches and hosts regular career fares. The college operates its own on-campus daycare.
