Bible colleges combine traditional courses with scriptural studies to offer their students a degree program strong in Christian and biblical knowledge. A degree from a Bible college frequently enhances the resume of students looking for positions with religious institutions after graduation and prepares them for ministry-type jobs. Bible college degrees may not be considered in the same light as other degrees for positions in the secular world though. A lack of philosophy courses, biology taught from a Christian perspective and differences in scientific theory cause a Bible college education to differ from that received at public universities.
Types of degrees offered at Bible colleges vary. Bible colleges provide a path to certificate and diploma programs and associate's and bachelor's degrees. Some also offer advanced certification such as master's and doctoral degrees as well, depending on the institution. Students may choose to attend a brick and mortar institution to obtain a degree or complete their studies via correspondence or Internet courses based on what options each college offers. Degrees focused on theology, social work, religion and Bible history are all options.
Bible college degrees vary widely depending on whether or not the institution is accredited and if so, the identity of the accrediting agency. The Association for Biblical Higher Education provides accreditation for around 200 North American Bible colleges and is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Students should be aware that even though an institution is accredited, the credits may not transfer to traditional universities or even to other Bible colleges. Once the decision is made to attend a Bible college, the student may be committed to completing his education at that institution in order to obtain a degree.
Students prefer to obtain their degree at a Bible college for several reasons. The absence of coed dorms, lack of the party atmosphere associated with many secular universities and the opportunity to associate with like-minded individuals draw students to Bible colleges. The freedom to pray in an educational setting is also attractive, as is the opportunity to obtain a degree tailored to their religious beliefs.
