How to Critique My Oral Presentation

Oral presentations are essential in most organizations, from schools to the business world, and mastering the basics are critical for personal and career advancement. The factors that go into making an effective oral presentation are well-known and accessible to just about anyone, so if you're serious about doing it right, and don't mind some hard work and practice, you can produce an excellent oral presentation. Having a few friends to offer constructive criticism will be especially helpful.

Instructions

    • 1

Set yourself up to rehearse your oral presentation. Try to replicate the final presentation in as many ways as possible: use the same room and wear the clothes you intend to wear.

    • 2

Create a grading rubric that describes the main elements that your presentation should have. Examples should include clarity of speech, eye contact and graphics. List these qualities on the left-hand side of a page and create boxes with scores from one to three across from each element.

    • 3

Video your rehearsed presentation using a digital camera. If possible, have a few friends act as an audience for you. Give them a copy of the presentation rubric you designed.

    • 4

Review the video and examine your presentation skills. Was your tone even and your pronunciation clear? Did you make sufficient eye contact or did you constantly refer to your notes? Were the images you used in your displays appropriate and relevant? If you had audience members, did you respond to questions clearly and directly? If you had others view the presentation, have them grade it as well.
