How to Prepare for an Oral College Presentation

Public speaking terrifies many people. According to Roger Seip, writing for the Virginia Education Association, more than 75 percent of Americans surveyed report that they suffer from "glossophobia," a debilitating fear of public speaking. Yet effective speaking is perhaps one of the best money-making skills a person can acquire. Overcoming the fear of public speaking improves delivery and can be accomplished with preparation and practice. Preparing for your college oral presentation will make the speech easier and improve your grade.

Instructions

    • 1

Write your speech and read it enough times to have all the important points memorized. Create an outline of your presentation using key words and phrases as cues for your memory.

    • 2

Create a PowerPoint slide-show from your outline using one slide for each major point and its subpoints. Your outline will be on the slides and you can put images or charts appropriate in each part of your presentation on the slides along with the cues from your outline.

    • 3

Set up a computer, microphone and video camera so that your computer will record a movie of you speaking. Record yourself giving the speech, talking from the prompts on the slides and clicking the mouse to advance the slide show as you finish speaking about each point. Sit down and watch the recording, be critical of your performance and make notes about where you need to do better. Repeat this process until you feel comfortable with the presentation you are giving.

    • 4

Invite your study partner or partners, who may also be working on speeches, to meet with you for practice. Ideally, this should happen in a room on campus that has a projector you can connect to with laptop. If you do not have a laptop, copy your slide show to a disk and borrow a laptop to run it on. You may be able to check out a laptop from your college.

    • 5

Perform your speech live in a room at the college with your study partners watching. This will let you figure out how to hook up to the projector and your audience of study partners can see your slides projected on the screen behind you while you take your cues off the computer screen in front of you. Give the speech to your friends standing in front of room like you will be on the day of the presentation.

Have one of your friends take video during your practice presentation so you can watch it afterward. Once you have given the speech, get feedback from your friends and watch the video. Repeat this until you are comfortable speaking in front of this small group.
