Stages of an Oral Presentation

Many people dislike public speaking and feel nervous when facing other people in oral presentations. You can control this anxiety by carefully planning and preparing for the different stages of your oral presentation. When you do research and follow simple steps and instructions, your oral presentation will turn out easier than you thought.
  1. Plan

    • To deliver a good oral presentation, you need to have a clear plan. Do research and brainstorm ideas for your project. Ask yourself what the purpose of your presentation is. Are you persuading others, analyzing data or simply providing information? In addition, keep in mind who your audience is so that the material and language reflect the appropriate level and expectations of your audience.

    Structure

    • In structure, your oral presentation is similar to an essay. You need to have an introduction, a main body and a conclusion. You can begin your presentation with a relevant question or a personal anecdote to catch the audience's interest and to lead into the main topic of your presentation.

    Natural Delivery

    • As you are preparing and delivering your oral presentation, keep in mind that speech is different from written language. Don't merely read off the screen or present large blocks of text. Project your voice by varying your intonation and speaking loudly enough that the members of the audience do not lose interest or get bored. You need to sound as natural as possible, enunciate well and avoid the temptation to talk too fast because of nerves.

    Discussion

    • Leave time for questions and discussion at the end of the presentation. Demonstrate your knowledge and confidence in your skills by accepting questions and elaborating on issues of interest to your audience. After giving an answer, check with the questioner to see if you have answered his question sufficiently. If you do not know the answer, admit it. You may consult other audience members or suggest resources where the questioner can find an answer to his question.
