What Are Acceptable Pharmacy Majors?

A pharmacist is required to have a doctor of pharmacy (Pharm. D.) degree to be eligible to take the licensing exams. Several undergraduate majors can be pursued prior to applying for admission into a pharmacy program.
  1. Pharmaceutical Science

    • The most common major chosen by students who wish to become pharmacists is pharmaceutical science or pre-pharmacy. These programs include the specific coursework required to apply to pharmacy school including the general sciences, upper level biology, chemistry and pharmacology.

    Health-Related Professions

    • Students may choose to major in another health-related sciences prior to applying to pharmacy school. A student interested in mental health-related pharmacy can major in psychology to gain additional education in their field of interest. Additional elective classes are required to fulfill pharmacy school prerequisites.

    Business Administration

    • Students desiring to work as a pharmacist for a health organization or in a management position may major in business administration. Additional elective courses would be required prior to admission into pharmacy school.
