What Kind of of Art Majors Are There?

There are as many types of art majors as there are types of art. Though most traditional colleges and universities will have a limited number of art-related majors, specialized art schools offer expanded offerings to those who wish to make art their career.
  1. Art Concept Majors

    • Some majors --- art education, art direction, art therapy, art criticism and art history --- focus broadly on art as a concept. These majors may or may not require many technical artistic skills and often coincide with other disciplines of study. For those who love art but desire a career that doesn't depend on creating it, an art concept major may be the way to go.

    Traditional Art Majors

    • Traditional art majors can be further defined into areas such as painting, sculpture, and involve working with tangible mediums such as paint, metal, charcoal, photography, ink, canvas, clay and paper. Traditional art majors can be hard to find outside of art schools.

    Computer-Based Art Majors

    • Computer-based art majors are those which involve digital medias, such as 3-D illustrating or design, digital art, drafting, video game design, and web design. Other elements of art, such as illustration and cartooning, are also transitioning into becoming more computer-based. These areas of art study often require access to expensive equipment, and programs can be limited by a school's budget. Visit facilities and see what equipment is available to students before selecting your institution and major.

    Other Art Majors

    • Additional types art majors defy easy categorization, such as furniture design or environmental design. Courses in these majors may require a mix of non-art-related concepts, computer skills and traditional materials. The courses may also be related to artistic skills, such as lighting.
