How to Write Qualitative Research Study Questions

Qualitative research is an important methodology because it allows the researchers to familiarize themselves with a behavior or phenomenon. The goal of qualitative research is to gain new insight or discover patterns in behavior that can then be used to make predictions about a larger group. This research process takes place mainly through examining case studies, interviewing individuals or groups, and observing the behavior or phenomenon in action. However, before the research can begin, you must first develop study questions. These questions give the study focus and will determine which variables will be studied or which behavior will be explored.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the topic you wish to study. Be sure that the subject is one that can be observed and measured in some manner.

    • 2

Perform background research on the subject. To develop your research questions, you must understand what is already known about the topic and what is yet to be explored.

    • 3

Determine which area(s) of your topic you wish to explore. For example, if your topic is cyberstalking, you may wish to study a more specific topic, such as Facebook stalking, gender differences in cyberstalking or online predators that target teens.

    • 4

Develop a question based on your specific topic(s). For example, if you choose the subject of gender differences in cyberstalking, your question may be: "Are boys or girls more likely to be victims of cyberstalking?"
