How to Use a Plastic Pipette Filler

Use a plastic pipette filler rather than your mouth to pipette potentially dangerous fluids while working in the lab. Developed to replace the danger and inaccuracy of using your mouth, plastic pipette fillers vary in design, but are made for ease of use with one hand and allow for precise measurement when filling pipettes. The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations notes that a pipette filler with a digital display may be easier to read than one with a micrometer setting.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the pipette to the zero mark. Use the rotating knob on the side usually labeled in milliliters to determine how much fluid is drawn into the pipette.

    • 2

Insert the non-tapered end of the pipette into the receiving notch on the bottom side of the pipette filler. Fit the pipette in the device snugly without forcing it so that it does not break.

    • 3

Place the other end of the pipette into the medium and turn the rotating knob to draw the medium into the pipette. Compare the reading on the pipette to the reading on the rotating knob to verify accurate calibration.
